About the Cover
Claudette Dean

Roots by Claudette Dean - 24" x 36" oil on canvas with collage.

She stands firmly rooted with the sun at her back in a sky filled with movement and colour. A light-filled staircase leads up to a bright future. With arms outstretched in a gesture of complete surrender, she is saying I AM.

Roots was painted in 2004 for a body of work that was meant to be a type of visual autobiography highlighting the interconnectedness of events and people which have shaped my life. A very special painting, it honours my birth family: mother - Irene, father - Roland James, brother - Roland Edward, and my dear sister - Rose Marie. You'll find us all featured in the collage of photos found amongst the tree roots; Rose and I are the only surviving members of our family.

These roots feed my "tree of life", sustain it with unconditional love and support and as a result it continues to flourish. For that I am eternally grateful….

About the Artist

Describing her work as "expressing the inexpressible through colour, form and word", Claudette Dean has been working as a professional artist since 1995. Born and educated in Canada, she has been based in the Bahamas since 1979 where she currently works from her studio in Freeport on the island of Grand Bahama. Her work is a part of The National Art Collection of the Bahamas and in 2008 she was granted an award from The Commonwealth of the Bahamas for her work in the realm of fine arts. Claudette has exhibited extensively in the Bahamas, Canada and the U.S.A. and can be found in private and corporate art collections throughout the world including that of The D'Aguilar Art Foundation. In 2006 her career as an artist came full circle when she held a one woman exhibition, Across a Sea of Dreams, at the museum in her hometown of Blind River, Ontario, Canada on the occasion of the town's centennial anniversary. Her work has been commissioned by The Prime Minister of the Bahamas and has graced the covers of Airwaves Magazine and of Woman Speak 2010, an anthology of work by woman writers and artists of the Caribbean. A much celebrated piece of her work, Sisters, was acquired in 2000 by the Paradise Island Promotion board and is on display at the Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. In 2010 she published a book, Inner Sanctum, which features a collection of her art and poetry; you can find it for purchase at www.blurb.com.

In her own words… "Unity consciousness is at the root of my work as an artist. My goal is to create art that speaks from the spirit to the spirit in a voice that reflects love and unity thereby promoting equity and compassion."
