Meditate a Moment
~ Wonderfully Different ~

with Parzival Sattva

Aleesha and I enjoy reading together. I pick up the book and she settles in to listen; it's one of our favourite pastimes. Currently we're reading a "sword and sorcery fantasy" series and really enjoying it. The story is, at its heart, a tale of ambition. Some are vying to become the high king over all the land, others to gain honour and glory, still others looking for money, lands, and titles. All of them are constantly looking for ways to distinguish themselves over others who are shooting for the same trophies and the same glories.

The need to distinguish ourselves above others does not happen only in fiction. The recent U.S. presidential race pitted two men against each other; each trying to distinguish themselves as the best option for the country.

Then there's the world of business, where competing companies attempt to distinguish their products from those of their rivals. Which provides the best solution to the greatest number of people at the best price? Which has the style/shape/size/features that are best for the largest customer base?

Inside businesses, people play politics to win that raise, get that promotion, land that job. Who can demonstrate that they are the best person in the role? Which option, from the vast array of resumes on a hiring manager's desk, is the one to go with?

When the best option is far and away the best, it's significantly better — so much better that it's obvious to all that it is. But it can also be exhausting to be so much better….

And it's here that my meditation begins:

Breathe in and out, slowly and deeply

Think of a quality you possess, one which makes you different or stand out from the crowd. Are you strong? Smart? Clever? Handy? Compassionate? Stylish?

Breathe in and hold.

Consider the benefits of having the quality — what good comes of it?

Breathe out completely.

Consider the detriments of having the quality — what bad comes of it?

Breathe in and out again, slowly and deeply.

We hold qualities because there is a net reward for us — the good outweighs the bad. Oftentimes, part of the reasons why we hold a quality is simply to feed our egos. And oftentimes, something that only serves to feed our egos can hurt those around us.

Once again, breathe in and out.

In the lists of good and bad, find the reasons which have no other purpose than to make you feel good, perhaps even at the expense of others.

Breathe in…

Does holding the quality serve a purpose beyond supporting your ego? Is it worth the energy to hold it, or can it be let go?

…hold…

Consider all the ways that the quality is not useful, bundle them up mentally into a shape or colour.

&#133and breathe out</i> <p>Release the bundle. <p>Feel the release of holding an unneeded burden and the increase in energy that can go towards being the wonderfully different and significant person you are. <p>Blessings to you!<p>namaste'<br> Parzival <br><br><br> <p><FONT SIZE=-1 COLOR="#51390e">Parzival Sattva means <i>"Follow your Heart, Purify your World"</i>.
