Divination for Beginners: Reading the Past, Present and Future Scott Cunningham ISBN #: 0-7387-0384-2 ![]() I am frequently asked for advice by beginners on which books to read about divination, witchcraft and herbalism; and I repeatedly answer, "You can't go wrong with a book by Scott Cunningham". This holds true with this one. This 232 page book is one of Scott Cunningham's last. First published in 1993 under the title The Art of Divination. In 1997 it was reissued as Pocket Guide to Fortune Telling and now has been renamed Divination for Beginners, as part of Llewellyn Publications, "Beginners Series". A wonderful reference, the book contains an overview of divination in the ancient world, how divination works, which questions to ask, and descriptions of many methods of divination; from reading clouds and crystal gazing, to more complex methods such as Tarot, Palmistry and the I-Ching. The appendix contains a dictionary of over 70 techniques of divination! Most importantly, Cunningham assures us in a clear and easy-to-follow way that one need not be psychic - anyone can learn divination. Cunningham explains that divination provides us with "a window into potential tomorrows - not of fate." Clearly, a book covering so many techniques can only get one started on the path of divination, but this book does it well and does it with ease. It can help one discover and choose the methods that are right for them, and gives the reader a rudimentary beginning in many fascinating methods. Scott Cunningham was a greatly respected teacher and leader of the modern Wiccan and Pagan movement. A practitioner of elemental magic for twenty years, he is credited with more than fifty books, both fiction and nonfiction. Reviewed by, |
