About The Cover
Carole Devereux

All my artwork is created from photographs, which I have taken with a high resolution Nikon digital camera. I then transfer the photographs to my PC where I create the artwork you see in its final form. I print these pieces on many different types of imported paper, which is available for Epson ink. My favorite paper is a 100% cotton rag made in Germany. The prints are of such high quality that one cannot tell they are printed by computer. My printer, which I absolutely love, is an Epson R2400. It prints canvas as well as paper, which is fed through the back, up to 13 inches wide. It also does great black and white and sepia tone printing.

I love working with original photographs and making composite images. I can get the light and subject matter just right very quickly. Then, I decide if I want to use a different background than the original. In many cases, I use backgrounds inspired by world famous photographer, J. Scott Peck. I visited him at his unveiling at the Bronze Coast Gallery in Oregon last year and talked to him about how he creates his artwork from his photographs. He told me his backgrounds are taken from Hubble Telescope website images. They are images of stars, planets, nebulae and galaxies.

I was so fascinated by this idea that I went home and tried it myself. The images you see here are the result of my attempt to fuse the light of the universe in the Hubble images with the light of the flowers in my pictures. I take a picture, then transfer it to an art program called Paint Shop Pro. I have a calibrated monitor so the colours I see on my computer screen match those I print. I cut and paste original images onto different background images I find at the Hubble website. The results are beautiful flowers, which blend with the light of space. I think these light-filled backgrounds harmonize well with the flower images. I then use many different techniques in the computer art program to bump up colour saturation, sharpen, soften, blend, and generally refine the original photo, so much so that one often cannot tell the original image was a photograph.

I also love to take portraits of animals and people. I have made several portraits of animals and their humans as keepsakes.

Please visit my website for more about my work with animals. I have been an Animal Communication Specialist for 11 years and work with clients across the country via phone and computer. I also am working with people and animals in person at local Pet Fairs, horse barns, and pet stores in Oregon and Washington. I teach yearly workshops at my home in La Center, WA and have created artwork for websites. Recently my images have graced the covers of magazines. My next important project is to create the cover art for my second book, which just completed its first stage of editing. The book was written by myself and my horses, titled Spirit of the Horse.

Blessings to all,
