Spirits of Light, Wings of Fire
by Dj Brown

In mythology, upon wings of fire, the phoenix flies from sunrise to sunset, crumbling to ashes when its time is called, only to rise again in the light of rebirth when beckoned forth. So too, we rise and fall, over and over, changing and growing more beautiful with each rise when the mystical Light reaches out to infuse us with life again.

The tides of change are eternally rolling, churning and flowing. We have two choices of compasses. We may embrace change with an open mind and heart or, we might choose to stand hard and brittle against it—more comfortable with the status quo. Neither is right or wrong. It is levels of comfort and what we are capable of managing in the moment. Change can be difficult, sometimes it's painful—then there are times change is beautiful, exciting and exhilarating—ultimately, it's life.

Khalil Gibran wrote, "Each thing that exists remains forever, and the existence of existence is proof of its eternity." He goes on to say, "If eternal existence is altered, then it must become more beautiful; and if it disappears, it must return with more sublime image; and if it sleeps, it must dream of a better awakening, for it is ever greater upon its rebirth."

With each change we make we are reborn to a new understanding and knowledge. We can change our mind when we learn something new. We change when our attitude, our habits, our opinions, our actions, our beliefs change. Each time we change something, we change who we are.

Like an unseen wind, change can be a gentle breeze or wild storm. However, even the most fierce of storms is capable of changing to beauty by way of a rainbow, so go the tides of change in our lives. For every storm we face, we also reap the joy of our own rainbow renewal. We become the glory of our growth experience. Our view of life becomes more refined with compassion and love.

We see beautiful examples of change all around us—a chrysalis in a cocoon becomes a magnificent butterfly. A tiny egg lying nested in the willow tree hatches to become a sweet songbird. Folded tightly into itself the bud on the bush becomes a beautifully perfect rose. Our ears hear change when a spring storm lulls us with its rhythmic fall of rain. We also consciously choose to create change. We plant seeds in the spring garden to become food for sustenance. Splashes of colour on a canvas become a painting. Logs become a home and shelter. Thoughts become words which later become poems. Stone chipped away with a chisel becomes a sculpture. Likewise tides of change give us opportunity to become the glorious tapestries of our lives creations and experiences.

Yes, the tides of change come like waves to shore. They move, transform, and make us more magnificent than we are in the moment. Change is food for the spirit, the sculptor of character. Change wears away our sharp edges into a smooth open basin ready to be filled with life's grace and glory.

Change comes invited or not. We can stand—straining against it, thinking the ground is stable, but when it begins to shake, we will unwillingly tumble along with it. Welcoming change readies us for the time when the ground will surely shake. We may tumble along with it but using it to our advantage we might find newly uncovered ground even more fertile for us to plant our roots in. The act of flowing with change makes us less likely to bump and bruise along with the tide. Ultimately, if we stand strong against the trembling ground we are still changed by the movement under our feet. Our experience changes so next time we may choose to make a different decision.

As the days of our lives become seasons of growth and harvest I wonder who we will be as we change and mature. What gritty sand needs to be worn away to leave a beautiful well-hollowed-out-basin for the blessed times of life to spill in?

Who knows what sunrise might bring. Who knows how we might be transformed before sunset arrives. We can be assured of this mystical truth. To be eternal, we must change and to live is to change.
