I Am What I Am, Until I Am Not
by Dj Brown

Magic hour still shifting with shadows of night fade in the light as dawn's illumination breaks over the horizon. The shadows born in darkness melt away as morning light crawls across the land erasing night's lingering slumber. In the light of morning all is made anew. As sure as the sun rises, on the horizon each morning, we too shall stand on our own horizons again and again seeking out our path. We shall be guided when we are ready. The Talmud says, "Every blade of grass has its angel that bends over it and whispers, Grow, Grow." And as such, we can depend on our angel's whisperings to encourage our better selves to move forward.

Our personal horizons may be the moments where we, as practicing students of life graduate forward into a new meaning of the moment. For example, in yoga I learned the poses are my horizons. Working to achieve the distance between imposed complications of self doubt and physical body capability I am challenged to grow and search for balance and breath. I find at moments in pose I am not breathing or if I am it's not a restful breath. No one can change it to a restful pose but me and I do so by backing off to the mountain pose, find my balance, begin anew and then move forward again. Some days I may feel caught in a cycle of frustration and self judgment. When I bring these highly charged emotions to my yoga mat I become discouraged and think yoga may not be for me. However, there is another way. Yoga is not a competition with the person beside us or in front or even with our selves. Some of us find yoga as part of our path and our life sustaining practice.

The practicing yoga student is like each of us; you, and you, and you and you, and me too. Our days are full of practicing opportunities. It could be yoga, meditation, gardening, music or dancing. No matter the practice there are horizons in each—when awakened we melt in the light of awareness and grow and further our practice with heightened peace and dedication. Our paths may not always be apparent, on the other hand, that challenge may be part of our journey.

Amazingly enough we might agree that as we age in wisdom our trek to our next horizon may seem further away and we are asked to move deeper into our self for answers to our quest of enlightenment. If this were not so we would become complacent and even lazy in our search for the right path of the journey forward. As we travel along there are many lessons we'll keep with us and other experiences we'll choose to let go and free ourselves from the burden of extra and unnecessary baggage.

When I go to my yoga mat I am what I am. I give myself over to my spiritual Self seeking peace with my body, mind and spirit. When I finish I bless the moments with gratitude and leave my mat and I am not what I was. I am what I am until I am not and having reached another horizon and seen the beauty of movement and practiced discipline I am moved to the wonder of life.

We are all seekers of one thing or another and I for one have sought many avenues and use a chosen few that free me to travel my path with as little excess as possible. Each of us is inspired in different ways. Our horizons differ, although the light we seek is the same. Our journeys take us on different paths. We each meet our teachers and masters along the way. We gather to us moments which define our lives and spirits. From those moments we weave our tapestry of living love.

In the final dawn of our times we shall stand in the valley of deepest darkness for the last time - we will see on the horizon the truest of true Light. We shall stand naked in the wind with only the tapestry of living love we have gathered along the way. The Light shall fill the valley creeping along the land to evaporate the dew, melt the shadows for us one last time. Grounded to Mother Earth by feet that carried us this far—the Light reaches us and we gladly walk the last rise to meet our Blessed Breath of Life at the horizon and rise on the winds of time to bless the "goodness of our life and melt in the glory of the Everlasting."
