Get On Track!
Step it up a Notch - Literally!

with Lucy Brandt

It's time to get out and about and enjoy the FREE benefits of Vitamin D coming from the wonderful sunshine. Time to smell those smells of summertime fun. Time to listen, enjoy, LIVE, and feel life.

This is one of the best times of the year to get out and move it for free. Simple. Take your pets, kids, significant other or simply your self for a nice refreshing walk mid-day. I guarantee you will not get that afternoon slump.

The following are the best 30 easy workouts anyone can enjoy.

Clean up your yard. I bet your gardens and/or yard could use some tidying up.

Plant early crops in your garden. If you live in an apartment/townhome/condo? Plant container plantings for your deck/patio; like herbs and/or flowers. These are very rewarding to take care of. Plus you can have fresh herbs and/or veggies right at your fingertips.

Walk to the nearest park and meditate/perform Yoga. Being outside and walking somewhere/anywhere is free.

Run and shoot hoops with your children. Watch how your kids run, jump, and play. Learn from them. Kids have a natural instinct to not sit still. When did we cross that line and become sedentary? We don't have to remain that way.

Volunteer to coach a local sports team. From little league clinics to high school sports, I'm sure they could all use another set of eyes and hands.

Play ball! Seriously. Get a group of your peers and start up a ball team.

Organize a group of co-workers to take walks during the lunch break, even if it's around the office building, inside or outside; even on rainy days if folks organized a "folks' walk" and paraded around and up and down the steps - there's a free work out!

Go fly a kite. For real! There could potentially be lots of walking and retrieving that kite, if your piloting skills are anything like mine! Hee hee. Just a word of caution - do NOT fly it near powerlines.

Wash your vehicle. THAT is a good workout and something the car could use. Organize a community car wash. Get the young people involved.

Hang your freshly washed laundry outside on a clothesline. Seriously! If you live in a development where this is possible, do it. First you'll be "moving it" by carrying the clothes and hanging them out and second, you'll be helping the environment by saving on electricity. Let the sun and air dry your clothes - for FREE! Nothing like the sweet smell of linens that have dried on the line after a long, rewarding day. I do believe the fresh linens produce very calm dreams.

Volunteer at a recycling or a donation centre. These places can always use help and it's a get up and move it operation. You'd be helping the donors by getting items out of their vehicles and then sorting to their perspective bins (at the recycling centre) and, at the donation centre, taking the items to where they are stored. You are also helping Mama Earth by "paying it forward".

Speaking of recycling… Organize a walk or go by yourself - walk along a stretch of road and pick up trash, remember the bottles and cans can be recycled.

Skip stones across a pond or a lake. Throwing is an awesome arm workout. The other evening at my second job, we had a carton of out-dated eggs. I took them outside and thought what fun it would be to throw one. There's a field and a pond, downhill, and I figured some critter would find a delicious meal. So I did. I threw it about 20 feet up in the air, then when it landed - it bounced! What the…? So I had to throw another and another. Well, let me tell you, 10 out of those 12 eggs bounced! Funny, huh? Point being throwing is a good exercise.

Throw a Frisbee. Teach your kids, dogs, parents, neighbours, whomever to catch a Frisbee. This is fun!

Go ride your bike. If you own a bike, dust that bad boy off and go for a spin. Nothing like an early morning bike ride before any traffic is out and about.

Skate. Skating is a total full body workout whether on ice or cement… just do it!!!

Swim. Find a pond, pool, lake, or ocean and have a good swim. Water is an awesome tool to get your body in shape.

Power walk on a beach. This is an awesome leg workout. Step it up a notch? Run on the beach - beach volley ball - or remember that Frisbee above - try throwing that on a beach.

Use steps instead of an elevator. Using steps/stairs instead of an elevator is a great leg workout. Once you've mastered the "climb", try skipping steps, going up. I don't recommend this coming down however.

Go bowling. Bowling is a lot of fun. If you haven't been bowling for a good number of years, shame on you! It's relatively inexpensive and a good total body workout.

Tennis. Tennis is another sport that can be played solo (provided there is a backboard) or find another tennis enthusiast.

Go veggie/fruit picking. Find a local orchard or farmer that allows u-pick. It's so fun to pick your own produce.

Bird watch. This is an amazing way to spend some quality time outside and get to know your environment. Local colleges, extension services offer these often-times free classes.

Nature walk. In addition to the above, take a nature walk. Learn the flora and fauna in your area. Learn what plants are wild edibles. DO NOT attempt to eat anything unless you have been told by a professional what is edible.

Visit a local nursing home. How could this be a mini, free workout you ask? Well, patients are always willing to be wheeled around the grounds and share their past with "youngsters".

Pet sit. Folks are always wanting to get away on vacation and with this you could even be paid. What's more fun than walking a dog? I love watching their little (or big as the case may be) backsides as they clip along!

Kid sit. You think pets get you up and moving? Try watching little ones. I bet a body part you will get a workout!

Start jogging. An early morning run along an empty path, the local school track, or local road (with caution) is so invigorating.

Jump rope. I love jumping rope! WHAT A WORKOUT! Try it and see if you don't work up a sweat.

Stretching. If nothing above appeals to you, get up and stretch! Watch kids, cats, dogs, all animals - they all stretch. This is one of the BEST forms of easy exercise.

There are a few ways you can be accountable for stepping up your workout program. For instance, track/journal your food intake as well as your workout schedule. Wear a pedometer. Try to get in at least 10,000 steps daily. Also have a buddy workout/diet with you. It's always better to be accountable to someone other than yourself. If you are of the mindset that you don't need to be accountable to anyone but you, that is great, but not many folks are. When you are tempted to not work out or tempted to eat something you shouldn't? Call that friend or e-mail that friend. They'll set you straight. You can keep each other in line.

Primal workouts are right at your fingertips. What do I mean by Primal? Well, primal itself means first or earliest, and often basic. So keeping that in mind, you could have a Primal workout simply by picking up and throwing sticks and twigs from your yard into the woods. By weeding your garden, shrubs, bushes, etc. You could fit in a mini work out by jogging up that hill in the park and back down a few times. Or not even jogging. Simply walking is a primal workout. Basic. Simple. Fun! Primal!

These are just some ways to step it up a notch and get moving. You can choose to be sedentary or to get up and move. There is no excuse not to get outside and enjoy Nature at her finest and learn to live and be the best person you can possibly be. One doesn't have to live in the country to enjoy this wonderful Earth. A city person has many opportunities to venture out as there are parks in the city for folks to get away from the concrete and be at peace. It's there for the asking. It's there for us to enjoy. One just has to find it; that is if one is willing to find it. Me? I choose to seek it out and enjoy it to the fullest.

It is time for being Green and Green is as close as you make it.

She immensely enjoys her life with her three fur pals, Dug 'da Pug (who is just a baby boy), Inga (who is a Great Dane in a Yorkie's body), and Emma (who goes with the flow - a wirehaired mini Dachshund). When these three aren't asking for ALL of her attention, she has five grandchildren, all from her daughter. She also spends quality time with her son and his girlfriend and her Mom, who is her best friend. Being a keeper of the forest (meaning total lover of nature) is a much rewarding, time-consuming job for her as well.

Besides holding down two jobs, she enjoys gardening, both indoors and outdoors, bird-watching, day dreaming, and soul searching. In her spare time, which is rare, you can catch her laying in the grass becoming one with Mama Earth.
