Meditate a Moment
with Parzival Sattva

Society can be a mind-numbing, fun-sucking beast. It demands that the young grow up quickly, that responsibility and severity be key words in public life, and even in letting our hair down and relaxing for a bit, we find ways to be productive. Nowhere, it seems, is there room for a bit of mindless silliness.

While I can't explain why, riding in an elevator is one prime example of this phenomenon. Step into the little metal box, the door slides closed, push the button, and stand in some sort of composed attitude of semi-patience while not looking at anything in particular and certainly not looking at anyone at all. Even when riding in the elevator all alone!

Or how about when driving in the car and a song comes on that we love. How often do we hold back on singing along, fearful that people in the cars around us will see us belting out our favourite tune?

Or how about the number of times we hear and/or say "act your age".

This is where my meditation begins. And it's not one where you can simply sit in a room with quiet music, close your eyes, and contemplate the Divine. Instead, find a space where you are safe, perhaps in that elevator all alone, or perhaps in the car with the radio on — anywhere you feel confined by limitations.

Take a deep breath and feel the walls around you. These walls that you feel are self-created. They are actively encouraged by society but are built by you.

Take a deep breath and exhale them away. Walls that you build are walls you can destroy. They are yours to do with as you please.

And now look around you.

Feel free to dance in the elevator and push the buttons with a panache. Feel free to sing at the top of your lungs in the car. Skip on the path in the park, twirl in the lap pool, climb the tree, dance and cavort and love! And breathe freely!

Silly is an embodiment of spirituality.
