A Spiritually Enlightening Online Magazine. July's Theme: "Risibility" This is a story about a water drop named M'kewl. Past stories about M'kewl are in prior issues of Timeless Spirit: how he climbed a mountain, how he planned it, and what he found at the summit. This story is about something he found after he'd made his way back to the ocean depths
.
"I'm spinning and twisting Finding the depths By doing not listening M'kewl drifted mindlessly down into the deep dark world of the ocean's depths, lost in a self-satisfied glow of having climbed a mountain. He sing-sang his tune with whatever notes came to mind; little snatches of half-remembered melodies and random tuneless rambles, mixed together in a mishmash of sound that only he enjoyed. Everyone else cringed but M'kewl didn't notice or mind.
At some point, he knew, he'd be driven to try some new audacious scheme — perhaps even to try to reach the stars he'd seen from the mountain top just a while before. But for now, a bit of rest in the dark of deep ocean night was in order
.
As M'kewl drifted down further and further, he began to hear sounds floating up. First a hint of sound, then waves of something almost identifiable, and then the first solid knowledge that, while he wasn't clear on the details, there were water molecules having fun! The sleepy self-delight lifted and he swam down to see if he could join in.
The ocean floor doesn't have many delights for a water drop that is young at heart, but volcanic vents are one of them. A combination of hot tub, water cannon, and ferris wheel, drops would leap into the centre of the vent, be superheated and shot upward, then would cool and fall back towards the base of the vent to do it all again. Shrieks of delights and laughter echoed around as molecules played and frolicked. And of course, those sounds were counter-pointed by curmudgeonly drops grumbling about what a waste of time such antics were.
M'kewl dove into the fun and shot high into the surrounding ocean, enjoying the heat and speed. As he began to drift down for the next go-around, he bumped into a drop who was in a full-throated litany of complaining,"
you drops have no self-respect, no self-control, why when I was a younger drop I was a serious drop and maintained the proper gravitas appropriate to our station
" and other such thoughts. He wheeled around and began to give M'kewl a rather severe talking to, "And what of you, you self-centred waster of time and energy, not even looking where you are going?" M'kewl simply asked, "And what are you doing? Wasting time berating others while fun waits just below?" M'kewl continued his descent, lining up for his next go-round.
Into the vent and shot out again, M'kewl flew up, arched over, and began to drift down when, as fate would have it, he bumped into the same grumbling molecule. "You again! You wretched waste of oxygen and hydrogen atoms! How dare you bump into me again!!" And M'kewl simply asked, "Why do you float here and grumble when in there is such good fun? Are you afraid?" And Grumbler (because that's the name M'kewl had now given this grumbling drop) said, "Me, afraid? No, I'm not afraid. I just have better things to do than partake in the simple-minded fun you seem to take such a delight in." M'kewl just smiled and reached out, "Come on, it's not hard. I'll show you."
Grumbling and complaining and resisting but never enough of any of them to actually stop his following, Grumbler and M'kewl made their way to the vent and jumped in. They superheated and shot up and out, screaming and laughing in absolute delight, bumping and jostling into each other as their ride on the current took them higher and higher. Grumbler couldn't stop laughing, releasing eons of pent-up emotion with that one bit of fun. Over and over they leapt into the vent then shot out tumbling, spinning and wheeling, laughing and giggling uncontrollably.
After one last ride, M'kewl began to spin off and called out to Grumbler, "It's time for me to rest for a while. Enjoy the vent!" And as M'kewl headed to a quieter part of the ocean floor, he could hear the rumbling laughter of Grumbler as he began to call out to other complaining molecules to join him in his new-found fun.
