Let's Talk Tarot
with Marcia McCord

I Rise

I will arise and go now,
And go to Innisfree,
And a small cabin build there,
Of clay and wattles made;
Nine bean rows will I have there,
A hive for the honey bee,
And live alone in the bee-loud glade.

And I shall have some peace there,
For peace comes dropping slow,
Dropping from the veils of the morning
To where the cricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer,
And noon a purple glow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.

I will arise and go now,
For always night and day
I hear lake water lapping
With low sounds by the shore;
While I stand on the roadway
Or on the pavements gray,
I hear it in the deep heart's core.

William Butler Yeats, 1865-1939

Our friend Vince met us in his home town in County Mayo, the oft-Tidy Town of Westport and became our tour guide. Vince has custody of his family home lying near the water and all the problems associated with owning property that is far away from a current residence. Our time in Ireland was magical, if for no other reason than the sights and smells were so different from California life. As much as I enjoy life in California, which must seem like heaven to some people who do not live here, getting away to a quiet place was a little miracle.

Vince is a soft-spoken man, neatly dressed, dignified; a man who wants neither to offend nor be offended. He and my husband have been friends through work and especially as celebrants of St. Patrick's Day in San Francisco. Because we did not want to intrude on his Westport home as he goes there to try to stave off the effects of time on an otherwise unoccupied house, we stayed at a bright condo on the Mall River. We did visit the house with its yard which seemed nearly semi-tropical so near the water, the front parlour which appeared to have been frozen in time as if from a small scene from Warehouse 13 or some other form of time travel.

Vince took us to his favourite haunts: The Public Library, the church on the Mall River with so many colours of marble, a cozy pub with a wide selection and a well-worn bar. He took us to the ancient Round Tower and graveyard, the ruins of the church and new church at Aghagower with the sunset view along the pilgrimage of St. Patrick. Aghagower means "Field of the Springs" and among its gifts is the view of the winding path to the west, up and around Croagh Patrick. There were stone walls and running water and happy dogs in the quiet of the afternoon. Peat smoke laced the air. It was a pilgrimage of discovery for me, one of memory for Vince.

"I shall rise and go now," Vince quoted softly, "and go to Innisfree…."

I could feel his nostalgia in that perfect afternoon for a place that almost was, like an island in the fog lying just offshore, just out of sight with kelpies bobbing, observing in wonder and patience the strange creatures who walk about on the green and green and green.

I will arise and go now,- 3 of Wands
And go to Innisfree, - 6 of Swords
And a small cabin build there, - 4 of Wands
Of clay and wattles made, - 3 of Pentacles
Nine bean rows will I have there, - 7 of Pentacles
A hive for the honey bee, - Queen of Pentacles
And live alone in the bee-loud glade. - 9 of Pentacles

Line by line, I see the play of cards that take me from the hubbub of electrified and conflicted Western life to a place in tune with the earth, big enough for me.

I may rise and leave Ireland to come back to my hectic life in California with my laptops and DROID phone, sirens down the street, loud bangs in the night. But I have a place where I keep Ireland. I can rise and go there and enjoy the din of nature instead.

I hear it in the deep heart's core. - The Hermit

I rise.

Best wishes.
