Checking the temperature of the water, I decide to add more hot. I light the candle, turn the CD player on, and allow the music to begin filling the air. Stepping into the tub, I pull the curtain closed, making sure it doesn't touch the flame.

Sitting in the water, watching the candlelight dance on the tiled walls, I begin to feel the stresses of the day melt away. I sense the energy building as I turn off the tap.

Closing my eyes, I see the doorway. Slowly, I move toward it, gently touching the handle, as it swings open. I stand, frozen in place by the breathtaking beauty of the horizon before me. The sun is setting gently on the water, silhouettes of mountains rise in the distance.

As I take my first step through the doorway my feet disappear. I find myself on the ground, moving slowly across the grass and dirt. I curl my body under a rock and find a small hole in the ground. Twisting and turning, following the tunnels beneath the earth, I begin to realize I am an earthworm, one of the 'composters' of life.

When my journey is over, I contemplate the images and their symbolism. I realize each one of us is a 'composter'. We feel, experience, and grow - taking in what has happened and turning it into something new. Our tracks touch and affect others but ultimately the one we affect the most is our self.

I touch my friend's life by giving advice and a listening ear. I touch my husband's life by being one of the people he comes home to after living for 10 hours away from us. I touch a writer's life by allowing them a venue to express their thoughts, feelings and knowledge. I touch, ever so briefly, your life - when you read this magazine.

At the market today I was the lady who helped someone find the cranberry juice. At the rock shop, I exchanged a bracelet for one of another colour. At the coffee house, I purchased coffee and discussed third world countries. In one day I have the ability to touch many lives but again, the one I touch the most deeply is my own.

Is it any wonder I spend most of my energy focusing on my own needs? Getting rocks and CD's which assist me in my spiritual growth, reading books which enlighten and broaden my beliefs, eating foods which not only nurture my body, but also my soul?

Putting myself first is the greatest gift I can give anyone at any time. If I am happy, blissful, peaceful and fulfilled in any given situation, chances are the people around me are as well. After all, goodness is so contagious. Notice how a truly happy person can brighten your entire day?

So, please, give yourself the gift of yourself. Give yourself the attention and love you deserve. Allow you to get 'in touch' with you.

Before I end this 'illumination' I want to add a little bit about two of the books I reviewed for this issue. Dawn Baumann Brunke and Tira Brandon-Evans have both written, what I consider to be the best books I've read on spirituality. If you are only to purchase two books to assist you on your path this year, your money will be well spent on both of these. I can honestly say, they have both changed my life and deepened my spiritual beliefs in areas I never even knew I was shallow!
