I remember back in my Junior Year of High School, I had a great English and Speech Teacher. A gray haired 'crone' (before I had ever heard the term), she also managed to teach us the Elements of Logic, which probably wasn't part of the standard curriculum. With a thoroughly ironic approach to the subjects of societal and religious values, she managed to get across, without having to come right out and say it, that if you believed what your politicians had to say about their records, and your religious leaders had to say about god, and your newspaper about world events, you might as well take as literal truth what beer and cigarette commercials had to say about how their products would give you beautiful, healthy bodies, turn you into an athletic star, make you friends and get you laid. She gave me my first real lessons in working with the Truth (Throat) Chakra - that bark is not the same as bite; what people are saying often isn't what they mean.

I discovered I had a bone to pick with my society - which at that time was fighting an earlier version of the War on Terrorism, or the War on Drugs - the Cold War, or War Against the Commies (or the Russkies or the Yellow Horde). The 'We Are Right and They Are Wrong (Left, Bad, Evil, Rabid Dogs)' War. The 'God's On Our Side' War. The 'my pet cause' (or religion or race or political affiliation) is true and yours is false war. Just in time for the beginning of the sixties, I began to turn on the religion and the politics I was raised with. And had a glorious year as 'teacher's pet': best radical, iconoclast, rebel. Co-captain of the Debate Team. Star of the Junior Play as an old Polish Janitor falsely accused of murder. Fighter for the down-trodden. Exposer of Lies. Defender of stray dogs.

My Senior Year, my favorite teacher retired. She was replaced by Miss-Fresh-Faced-Protestant-Cold-As-Ice-Republican, who gave me C's instead of A's, booted me off the debate team, and couldn't find any part for me in the Senior Play. Her message to me: you can't growl and bite the hand that feeds you, and stay top dog. I had gone astray. I was out of the master's house; good luck as a street cur.

So I learned: God is Dog. What you care for, cares for you. I found my street pack, but I never went back to the life of a favored pet. I was all done as a 'running dog of the capitalist exploiters', as my left-wing friends might have put it. I gave up society, and causes, dropped out, found a wolf totem, lived as a lone wolf.

It was a lynx, a cat, a female, which brought me back to society. Back to the world.

The word cat is a homonym (sound-alike) and derived from an old Egyptian word, khat. The khat is the body. Our cat, or khat, is our physicality. Our grace, our sensuality. Our feminine delight in touch, taste, smell, sensation.

When Spirit wanted me to change my way of life, it sent a dream of a cat, which haunted me. And it sent me a physical woman, whose erotic allure called me back from the world even as the cat (lynx) totem showed me how to move among the spirit worlds. The cat and the woman were two expressions of the same truth: that Spirit lives in and through the body. To pet is to touch, to stroke, to surrender to pleasure and intimacy. That is khat.

So my pets are khats and dogs - what touches me, what I care for, what cares for me.
