Pet-sense
by Jean Hofve, DVM

The interconnectedness of all life is something I love to contemplate. It's a source of great comfort, as well as wonder.

The coolest thing about interconnectedness is that it's a real, established, no-doubt-about-it, scientific fact. Quantum physics has proved that matter and energy are one and the same; this is the meaning of Einstein's great equation, E=mc2. Modern authors, such as Michael Talbot (The Holographic Universe) and Lynn Taggart (The Field) further expanded on this concept, providing evidence that there's really only one energy and that all matter—what we see around us as "reality"—arises from that one energy. The whole is contained within each of its parts. As a result, we can influence physical matter by altering its energy fields. This substantiates many holistic modalities that heal by means of energy, including acupuncture, homeopathy, flower essences, crystals, chromotherapy, Reiki, meridian therapies, bioresonance, radionics, magnet therapy, and many others.

Similarly, holistic medicine sees disparate symptoms as part of the whole. If you went to a conventional physician because you had a runny nose and an ingrown toenail, those symptoms would be viewed—and treated—separately. A holistic approach would consider that both symptoms are occurring in the same body—and are therefore related. The connection might not be obvious; in fact, such connections are usually quite obscure. Nonetheless, the patient is treated as a whole being, and the treatment focuses on healing the underlying energetic causes of symptoms. This contrasts with modern medicine's aim of suppressing the symptoms with "anti"-biotics, "anti"-inflammatories, etc., all without recognizing or treating the energetics of the disease state.

One of my patients, a middle-aged female cat, taught me an important lesson about this. Daisy had been suffering with intermittent bladder inflammations; what many people refer to as a bladder infection, although in cats, true bacterial infection is almost never involved. Conventional medicine is relatively unsuccessful in treating this chronic condition, although in many cases, drugs such as antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, antidepressants, and others are often tried. We had tried diet changes, specific nutritional therapies, homeopathic remedies, flower essences, and herbs, yet the problem kept recurring.

Then one day I was talking to her guardian, who happened to mention that, many years earlier, Daisy had been attacked and injured by a large dog. Snap! That was it! Even though the attack was far distant by time, I realized the intense fear, the feeling that death was imminent, had caused a powerful energy shift which would persist for a lifetime if we didn't address it.

In homeopathy, there is a rubric, "Has never been well since…" that refers to a life-changing event. Different events, of course, produce different reactions, but in the case of an intensely frightening event, there is a homeopathic remedy, Aconite (Aconitum napellus), that is specific to precisely that type of profound fear.

Usually we think of Aconite for acute conditions, such as respiratory infections, influenza, or fever. But in this case, Aconite cured the deep-seated shock and fear Daisy was holding in her physical body and expressing through her urinary tract symptoms. A single dose of high-potency Aconite completely resolved the issue, and Daisy had no more bladder problems.

This is the beauty of interconnectedness; we can connect to other beings and use universal energy to bring about tremendous healing. We can do it for ourselves, for others, and for our planet, since we are all one. Healing any small part contributes to healing of the whole. Staying in that healing, loving place in our own beings isn't just good for us; it is good for us all.
