The Unlikely Climber
by Parzival Sattva

This story is about a drop of water. Not a drop the size of which comes out of the tap; those are much too big. No, this is a story about one little water drop. His name, just like every other drop that's ever been, is Molecule (but to his friends, he's M'kewl). M'kewl isn't special in any noticeable way. He looks like all water drops with a big body and two little bits stuck on his back that make humans think of Mickey Mouse. And he was created along with most every other drop way back before anyone ever thought of saying words like exist or aware. But M'kewl is different in one important way. He wanted to do something that no other drop had ever done before. He wanted to climb mountains.

Every water drop in existence has been to all sorts of places. In fact, the single greatest pleasure of water drops is to tell stories about the places they've been — atop the highest mountain in the Andes, the deepest depths of the Pacific, in the bodies of millions of living things of every shape, colour, and size — and trade hopes and dreams of visiting new destinations and encountering new experiences and adventures. But no one talks about climbing mountains.

All water drops know about the basics of life like gravity and fluid dynamics, turbulence and flow, current and chaos, and the one thing that can bring about the Great Rest: cold. M'kewl knew about them too. But instead of resigning himself to the inevitability of those things, he dreamed about doing what was thought undoable: climbing mountains.

Sometimes drops fall onto a mountain through wind and rain. Sometimes they arrive by being in an animal or a climber and coming out through breath, sweat, or urine. But no one had ever actually climbed one by itself. Oh sure, there was always capillary action that would allow a determined drop to beat gravity at its own game, at least for a little while. But at some point, that little bit of fun would come to an end and it was back to the natural order of things. But M'kewl didn't think so.

And so it was that he decided to climb a mountain. He told sponges and kelp. They said he was crazy. He told shrimps and snails. They said he was crazy. He told fishes of every colour and kind. They said he was crazy. Even when he told porpoises, penguins, and polar bears, they all said he was crazy.

Undeterred, he located a promising river and entered. Sometimes he swam upstream in an eddy, sometimes he found a counter current, and more often than not he did no better than two spots forward and one spot back. But he slowly made his way up the river. Soon it became steeper and flowed faster into his face. Everyone cried out that he was in the way and not following along the way he should, and gave him such angry looks that a lesser drop would have evaporated into a little puff of steam. But M'kewl kept his focus on jumping, leaping, dodging, twisting, spinning, swirling and climbing upstream some more. As his journey progressed, things got more and more difficult. Between dams, pipes, splashes and spray, and the ever constant danger of evaporation (and having to start all over again), he was always working, climbing, and planning, over and over again.

He was in mid-climb when he found me.

And who am I? No one special in any noticeable way, just someone who likes to sit beside a cool rushing stream and dream dreams. M'kewl waved to me from an eddy where I was soaking my feet and told me about his desire, his dream. After a time, he left to continue climbing again.

And he may very well be climbing still.

Climb on you crazy dreamer.

Climb on.
