Becoming Buddha
The Story of Siddhartha

Whitney Stewart and Sally Rippin
ISBN#: 0-89346-946-7

This is a story written for children but it is not only for children. Whitney has used many sources in order to come up with the elements of Siddhartha Gautama's life which every one agrees upon. Since his life story was memorized by his followers and never written down until hundreds of years after his lifetime, there are many different versions.

In the telling of his story, Whitney chose to use the artistic talent of Sally Rippin. The eyes within the images almost tell the story without reading the words on the page. Beautifully illustrated - this book provides an opportunity for parents to sit with their child/ren and create an atmosphere of sharing. When I read it to my 8 year old, it inspired hours of conversation as she stopped me during the reading of the book and then, over the days that followed the first reading… she asked more questions about this man they call Buddha.

The foreword is written by Tenzin Gyatso, The 14th Dalai Lama and at the end of the book, His Holiness the Dalai Lama teaches us how to meditate.

It is with great honour, I have reviewed this book. I have no desire to convert anyone to Buddhism but I do believe sharing his story, his example, can help to bring us all to a place of peace and happiness within our lives regardless of our own personal beliefs.
