Walk Your Talk
with Aleesha Stephenson

Ah birth! I love birth almost as much as I love completion. Finishing a project, completing a cycle is always a gift I love to experience within my life but as much as I love completion… birth is where it all begins.

The flood of inspiration, and the wonderment of a new project gets my feet moving and my mind running into fast forward to a point where I often have to slow it down and remove myself (usually through some time spent in meditation to get me into the now instead of the new). I just love pondering new things but I often spend too much time creating the idea in my mind, going this way and that way with the idea and in the end I can feel overwhelmed with the unlimited scope of my prospect.

At that point, I need to sit down and refocus. First I spend at least 5 minutes in meditation. For those of you who meditate regularly you know from experience how much benefit a mere 5 minutes can give. Just settling the mind and removing ourselves from the situation is so clearing… so cleansing.

Now that I'm refocused on the project, I remind myself what exactly the outcome is. Not the elaborate outcome, just the purpose, the simple purpose of doing this project. (for example: creating a new enclosure for one of my critters - the simple outcome is a safe environment for this critter to thrive and live.) Often I write down what the focus is (new enclosure) and what the absolute minimum requirements are. I find this to be a great step. Whenever I start to go to wild or over the top, I can come back to the minimum requirements and see my idea is not really needed and it can be put into the 'if you have enough time/money' idea pool. Staying focused and calm is the key to getting things done.

I am very fortunate though, I'm not a procrastinator. I'm a doer. Hence why I decided to create two issues this time instead of one… I like to get things done. My hubby is a procrastinator - actually he's been crowned the King of Procrastination within our family. He loves to plan an idea though. He loves to figure it out and buy the supplies, it's just getting it completed that's tough. But honestly, don't we all have numerous little projects within our home which are 98% completed? I think it's just a part of life.

We have another birth coming, within our family. My eldest daughter is getting married right around the time this issue comes online. She is symbolically birthing this new life for herself. I wish her the greatest of joy, the deepest of love and a multitude of new experiences for her and her new husband.

Looking back over the years, seeing the depth of my relationship with her - the closeness we both felt and the connection we nurtured. I hope the future brings the same loving relationship to her, when she decides to become the vessel for a new life, which of course will make me a grama… but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it!
