Walk Your Talk
with Aleesha Sattva

Ah… to live my life in a way that always respects and honours the divine within my Self and others…. This is one of the base beliefs I hold dear. Respect and honour. Two very integral parts of who I am and how I come to make decisions.

Early this year my marriage of almost thirteen years came to a very gentle and loving end. Dave and I decided that it was time for us to move forward with our lives and so, with the utmost respect and kindness we began preparing our Selves for change.

The greatest gift in this entire experience is our loving kindness. We have not spoken a harsh word to each other throughout this separation process. We have not acted in anger or spite towards each other. Instead, we treated (and continue to treat) each other with the same loving intent that we held so dear during our years together. I cannot even begin to tell you how wonderful this has been.

As Dave's sister said to me recently, "It shows what kind of a marriage the two of you had for you to be able to be so kind to one another through this transition. Good for you both!" And I agree completely. It is a testament to who we are as people and how we choose to act and react in times of possible stress, change, and upheaval. The same level of communication we shared with each other a year ago still stands firm today. We speak on the phone many times a week, always with loving openness (and often a whole lot of laughter as well). We are choosing to continue raising our children with love and mutual understanding - another huge gift!

There are two reasons I'm sharing this with you all. First and foremost you may have noticed my name has changed on the magazine (and my personal webpages). Second, I want to share the blessings of this time in my life and also some reasons for my new name!

When Dave and I chose to start a new chapter in our lives I had a decision to make. Should I stay with his surname, should I go back to my maiden name? Both of these options felt like I was being stagnant. Staying with what was familiar wasn't an option for me. I didn't want to be Aleesha Stephenson any longer. Even though my entire web presence rests on this name, I wanted to make a fresh start. Going back to my maiden name felt like a backwards movement. I felt like I was done with the vibration of that name and I wanted something fresh and new.

I had met Parzival Sattva (one of the writers here at T.S.M.) shortly before he started writing for the magazine. Our relationship has deepened and become more than I ever expected. I say this because honestly, as a woman who's now forty-eight years old… I never knew a relationship like this was even possible. Being with Parz is more than I ever dreamed possible (outside of cheesey romance novels)… and fullfills me completely. I didn't need him to complete me, as I was and am a very healthy-together-woman, but he's brought me to a whole new level of be-ing. For this I am very grateful. So when I wanted to rename myself - our relationship and his last name felt like the right next-step for me.

Sattva means pure. A sattvic food should not spread disease or evil. Rather its presence must purify the surroundings. A person or creature can be called sattvika if they are divine, pure and spiritual. They work for the welfare of the world. They speak the truth and are bold in nature. They speak kindly using precise language. They do not feel greed, selfishness or jealousy. They have a deep desire for improving spiritual knowledge and spend time meditating and acquiring inner-knowing.

My desire for this new phase of my life is to live up to my new name. To live my life to the fullest in service of divinity and in a continual cycle of spiritual persuit.

Thank you for being a part of this. Publishing this magazine, writing this column and shining my light is simply another avenue for my development and my hope is that it also assists you with yours.

p.s. While discussing my new last name a dear friend shared "Parzival is her physical partner…. Sattva is her spiritual partner." I couldn't have said it better myself!
