Tenth Anniversary Issue (and final issue) As a reviewer, I have the privilege of listening to a lot of music and recommending that which sings to me. Most of time, I get the music from publishing houses representing musicians who are known to the spiritual music listening world. Every now and then, however, I get my hands of something new and different, something that most people aren't aware of. So, if I may be so bold as to make introductions — Timeless Spirit readership, please meet Jimmy Be Free.
As I write this review, I'm listening to track after track of his album Grace play over the speakers. Rare is it that my soul weeps for the raw beauty of the emotion contained in music tracks, but it's weeping now. The compositions of Jimmy's are heartrending and deep felt, evoking beauty at every sweep of the bow, accompanied lightly with a bit of harmonic drums here, perhaps a hint of keyboard there, and the occasional use of looping, but always focused on a single hauntingly and achingly beautiful theme. The magic of his writing is, by and large, contained within the melodic strains of his instrument, Peacemaker.
And what an instrument it is. Jimmy plays a custom-built 7-string
I'd like to call it a violin (and I know he does), but it doesn't sound like it is. My ear tells me that a better description is that it's a viola with an enormous tonal range, from notes cello low to violin high. Jimmy uses that range to full effect with melodies that swoop high and low, playfully spin and mournfully cry, with each song being both airy and earthy. It's definitely a unique experience to listen to.
