Sisters of the Dark Moon - 13 Rituals of the Dark Goddess by Gail Wood ISBN#: 0-7387-0095-9 ![]() I started reading Sisters of the Dark Moon - 13 Rituals of the Dark Goddess by Gail Wood not really knowing what I was getting myself into. Not being Pagan or Wiccan, (or possessing much knowledge of either religion), I wasn't quite sure of what to expect. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised and feel a little bit more informed about ritual and self-exploration. The Dark Goddess is composed of different facets or stages of development, the first or youngest of these being the Dark Maiden. She encompasses the signs of Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, and Taurus. The Second is the Dark Mother, encapsulating the signs of Gemini, Cancer, Leo, and Virgo. Following her is the Dark Crone. She reigns over the signs of Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Capricorn. The author also chose to include a fourth aspect of the Goddess, Arachne the Dark Weaver, introducing a 13th sign not usually included in the traditional zodiac. Each sign and the attribute it represents includes an explanation and ritual intended for use of the reader to better understand and get in touch with that particular aspect of themselves. I found the book fairly easy to read and in parts extremely entertaining. I especially liked the background stories of ancient Gods and of course Goddesses, which foreshadowed each of the chapters. Because I lacked the knowledge about certain aspects of the religion and different components of ritual, I found the glossary at the end of the book very helpful. I felt as if the tone of the book was a bit too authoritative; but the author does urge the reader to question everything she writes, as they are only guidelines and suggestions. You are encouraged to make each ritual a personal experience and change what you may to make it so. My favourite chapter and ritual was the one for Libra. During this meditation you strip yourself of everything. You become empty and in essence become nothing. I found it very liberating and had chills creeping down my spine as I read it for the first time. I was so excited by this particular ritual I had to read it to my husband as soon as I saw him next; and couldn't help discussing it with all my friends. This was a ritual I absolutely had to try. I urge anyone who wants to get further in touch with themself to pick up this book. Who knows, you too may connect with a particular chapter and find yourself eager to try something you never expected to do. {The Unseen in Aquarius, Risk in Leo, Time in Pisces, Silence in Virgo, Identity in Aries, Descent in Libra, The Body in Taurus, Intuition in Scorpio, Knowledge in Gemini, Creativity in Sagittarius, Emotion in Cancer, Power in Capricorn, Arachne, for the intuitive and deep healing powers of the dark.} Reviewed by, |
