Wiccan Voices
with Anne Ellis

I've always believed in one God, though I rarely term it as such. I usually say Higher Power, or Universal Divine. It remains sexless and mystical. Sometimes I personify it into a specific deity - Brighid, Hecate, Odin, even Christos on occasion, but always with the understanding that this personification is created by me to make an incomprehensible energy easier to connect with. I've often felt very alone with this belief, even among my Wiccan friends.

Then one day my sister invited me to a Cosmic Mass, and while dancing barefoot on the wood floor of Christ Church Cathedral I suddenly realized that I was surrounded by 500 people who believed the same thing as me. A witch found a home in an Anglican Church.

The Cosmic Mass is an Earth Revival created by Matthew Fox, an ex Dominican priest, who's devoted his life and soul to "Creation Spirituality". It is a mixture of rituals gleaned from African Drumming and Dance, First Nations Traditions, and rites which are truly pagan to the core yet also devoutly Christian. The music is techno/rave/trance; the music of youth and the "underground". The desire to create a connection to Spirit, to be one with The Divine brought these 500 people together on July 7th, 2005.

Matthew Fox wanted to reinvigorate Christian Mass. To him, and many others, Sunday church service lacked a spark, it lacked the exhilaration of faith which brought one closer to the Divine. He ignited that spark with "Creation Spirituality". Created in the 90's, it has become a way for everyone - anyone with a desire to know, and connect, with The Divine to do so in ancient ways, known the world over, through dance, meditation, music and story.

Although Christian at its roots "Creation Spirituality" is presented in such a way that a Christian, Jew, Pagan etc. feels at home. I felt The Divine in me greet and dance with The Divine in all the others in attendance. We all felt The Divine around us, within us and understood that all Gods are one.

I danced the Via Postivia dance with my sister and strangers, who after moments were strangers no longer. I sweated and jumped upon the floor, raised my arms to the rafters of the church and called out to the Divine. I felt the joy and thrill of dancing my faith.

I cried the Via Negativa as a woman sang a song of a Witch walking to her death. I cried while a woman intoned in a deep rasping voice, "What have you done?" What have we done to the earth? Look at how we, the Children of God have raped, destroyed, killed and murdered Mother Earth. As Children of The Divine we've been given such a precious gift; this planet, and what have we chosen to do with it? "Cambodia, Rwanda, Vietnam, Guatemala, South Africa, too many genocides to list, too many names of dead babies to remember." Harsh and raw, we felt the deaths like our own, shed tears for strangers as we would family. The Divine spoke though her and wept, "What have you done?"

We lamented for The Earth, for Her children, for our children, and for ourselves. We wailed and cried for solace from the pain, forgiveness, and for a flicker of hope. For so long I have had a pain in my heart, a block that would not go away. I have been so lost; so alone on my spiritual journey, and as I sat on the floor with others keening all around me, I cried. The Block lifted, my heart felt free and I screamed my body clean. I was no longer alone. All around me were people who had felt just as abandoned by their Faith, just as lost and alone. Now we had each other.

We sang the Via Creativa and healed, found connection to ease the pain. We were not abandoned, not forgotten. The Divine had not given up on us. Some shook hands, others bowed, many hugged and we were a community.

One Spirit, One Divine united within 500 people created a Covenant; a covenant to the Earth, to love and compassion, to understanding and reverence of all peoples. Through the breaking of bread and a small sip of wine we became connected to the Earth; to Spirit and regardless of our faiths our covenant will never be broken.

A seed was planted that rainy July night. A seed that has been planted elsewhere in North America and more will be planted in the future as the Cosmic Mass grows and calls to people seeking a fresh path to The Divine.

Via Transformativa, the last dance of the night, danced our Divine Spark into a flame.

We danced a small seed of understanding and connection into a vine, which will forever intertwine within us. One day I will bump into someone downtown and I will look at them and see that seed in their soul. I will whisper the words Cosmic Mass and I will see their spark and see what has grown from the seeds they planted. I will have found a sibling. My faith in Divinity is renewed and my heart glows. Seeds of inspiration have sprouted.

Words in Bold face are The Four Paths of Creation Spirituality, used during the Cosmic mass service.
