The direction of male energy is up and out. The direction of female energy is down and in. The purpose of male energy is separation, individuation. The purpose of female energy is merger, universality. The rhythmic polarity of male and female, yang and yin, creates the Tao, or Path.

Try this thought experiment. Imagine sitting or standing perfectly upright, and next to you is another. Follow the direction of your spine in a focused line up into the sky, while your friend does the same. The higher you both go, the further you diverge. Each of you is finding your own 'star', your own unique destiny. On the other hand, if you both follow the energy downward, into the earth, you will merge, at the centre of the earth, not only with each other, but with every other soul on the planet.

The pulses of male and female energy, of separation and merger, operate rhythmically, at multiple levels. When we separate from our families (whether we are in male or female body), our energy impulse is male; when we form families of our own, merging again with something greater than self, our energy impulse is female. When societies expand and grow and develop their own unique path, they are 'male'; when they consolidate and mature and integrate with human culture as a whole, they are 'female'.

Both directions are required and of equal value. But confusion ensues when one direction dominates the other, and refuses to surrender to the opposite impulse.

On this planet, for thousands of years now, the predominate impulse has been male, that of going out, youthful expansion: 'Go West, Young Man!' - And, as we are beginning to realize, a turning point has come when population expansion must be curbed, when resources must be conserved, when 'having more' doesn't work and instead we must conserve, consolidate and make better use of what we have. The planet is turning from a 'male' to a 'female' phase.

'Men' must learn to surrender more deeply to 'women'; but 'women' must learn to accept more responsibility for the power which they draw from the masculine.

In the male phase, the female energy was quiescent, or 'passive'. Masculine energy bursts out and shapes the female 'earth' or potential into facts and acts - cultures, conquests, using the female 'womb' to birth more male activity into the world, stirring, stimulating and exciting the slow unfolding of time into a crescendo of orgasmic experience. Then the male is spent. The feminine must claim and reshape the impulses which the male has sent into her. She has come awake and begun to claim the power. Female energy mutates from 'passive', passes through the somewhat more honoured designation of 'receptive', and finally becomes 'magnetic' and then 'creative', claiming the 'active' role from the masculine. But now the action takes place in the feminine direction - 'acting in' instead of 'acting out'. Calling the world into the self, compressing it into essences, reshaping it into more harmonious forms, and passing these new dreams of reconciliation and peace into the earth centre, to be claimed as law by the 'Great Mother' for her children.

Many on a 'spiritual path' wonder why relationships seem to work more easily for those who are 'less spiritual'. At the level of 'personal relationship', there is an element of co-dependency, as males and females depend or 'lean upon' each other and play more static roles. These may be 'classical' roles in more structured societies, or 'role-reversals' in societies undergoing change. But even in the latter case, there is a tendency to define the roles of each party. In a full 'soul relationship', however, each individual must be capable of role reversals within the self, of standing fully upright with energy extensions both down into universality and up into individuality, uniting earth and sky through the self. Only when this is achieved, can a true 'soul mating' with another occur. (Which is why those who believe their soul mate 'must be out there somewhere' are in for a long wait; the soul-mating must occur in the self first, and then attract another who has accomplished the same.)

In the transitional phases, as we separate from traditional identifications, various forms of gender-identification are experimented with - bisexual, homosexual, or asexual phases may be passed through as we attempt to master the energetic systems of our own bodies.

Note the three phases of Creation, Preservation (Nurturing), and Destruction operate in both Male and Female direction - into the outer world, and into the inner world. Destruction, for instance, in the masculine direction, is explosive - things are blown apart (males and their war toys). While in the inner direction, destruction takes place not through explosion but through implosion - forms and facts are called in and so deeply compressed that their inner structure collapses and they return to formless and malleable potential (negatively, the 'black magic' of the 'evil witch'; or disguised in male form, 'demonology' or 'satanism'). In a healthy use of the Female Destructive power, the Feminine magnetizes the Masculine and compels it to abandon its separation and serve the tribe, to obey Her inner mandate as she consumes the energy the male has brought her in feeding herself and her children, the collective and the earth. The power of the feminine recycles - just as a smelter might melt down old rusted vehicles to attain the ore to be shaped into new ones.

All relationships are in some sense sexual, whether or not they are explicitly so. And still more to the point, all relationships are learning places for the Self as it becomes first the Soul, then the Oversoul, and finally the Tao itself.
