I Am What I Am Until I Am A More Enhanced I Am
by Rev. Cheryl Jewett

To have freedom, be willing to give freedom.
-Sanaya Roman

Freedom is an inner feeling, an attitude. It's the acknowledgment that you are capable of choosing what you want. It's your life, you own it. Joy tends to be nonexistent in a freedomless life. You feel like your rights have been trampled on. You feel trapped. Yet, by adopting the right attitude, no one can imprison your spirit.

The greatest barrier to freedom each moment lies in the way you view the world.

Your own thinking processes imprison you. If you carry anger and hatred in your heart then that is how you will experience the world. However you have the freedom to choose loving kindness instead, and live a happier, more blissful life. The world you experience is but an illusion created by the vibrations you emit. Seek to heighten those vibrations, thus spending more time as your Higher Self.

To be free, you need to release your need to have things be a specific way, to attachment to things, and to a rigid manner of thinking. You cannot feel freedom and inner peace if you are constantly dictating how situations should turn out. Discover a most-welcome self-determination when you step off from that treadmill of constant striving for more and more and more of things. And, adopt a more flexible way of thinking, being less rigid in your expectations of self and others. This is your path to sovereignty.

Learn to heighten your awareness. That way, you are less likely to respond out of habit. Observe how you respond and react to people and situations, and know you can change that response to something more pleasurable and constructive. A great teacher once said, One of the most powerful things you can do to change your world is to change your beliefs about the nature of life, people, reality to something more positive and begin to act accordingly. Remember, you don't need to change other people; in all reality, you cannot change another person. It must come from within that person. However, you can change your reaction to them. You are then free from having other people have to act in certain ways for you to be happy. You have liberated yourself from your own expectations.

Please understand you are free to respond, act, and feel any way you choose. Of course, there are consequences to this. It is your duty and obligation to think this through before acting. Actually, there is a level of freedom in everything you do. Orin who is channeled by Sanaya Roman reminds us, "The only limits to freedom are those you place on yourself. The ultimate freedom is to be and act in a way that reflects your own inner deeper truth. No matter what situation you find yourself in, you are free." Sanaya goes on, "To create more freedom in your life, do not look at the areas in which you don't have freedom; look instead at the areas where you have created freedom."

Today's children are learning that expressing one's individuality is really okay. Be it a multitude of piercings of the ear, the tongue, or other body spaces or a colouring or ironing of the hair, they often struggle with the previous generation to do just that. Be who they are. Free to be is what they want, as did we growing up. Remember the Flower Children of the 60s? Our parents were horrified. At our philosophy peace, love, and joy - our manner of dress and lifestyle, our music, and the list goes on. We had felt the horror of what we perceived as owning way too much, being pretentious, uncaring about others.

Some older women wear purple and red together and could not care less that others might consider it to be an odd combination of colours. It's called "The Red Hat Society". They are making a statement in this way, that being older allows you an element of independence, a freeing of the spirit. And, some people of a certain Asian country wear bright colours together, like purple and orange with a little lime green mixed in, what we might consider to be totally weird. It is their culture, a means of expressing themselves. These people are good examples of being who you are, even proud of who they are.

In this age of materialism, challenge yourself to develop the quality of detachment. Materialism can become an addiction and keep you stuck, suffering and fearful of losing what you have, or of not being or having enough. In that manner, materialism imprisons you and keeps you from striving for true bliss and everlasting spiritual growth. An important attitude to nurture as you seek to walk spiritually is to not require that things be a certain way for you to be happy; and to not care what other people think of you. Some people will like and accept who you are and others will not.

Freedom is the ability to have/not have what you want without it closing your heart. To be content with what is at the moment yet remaining aware of opportunities for enhancement. My daughter gets frustrated with me when we watch HGTV's House Hunters program and the couple seeking a new place to live has a budget of two million dollars, for example. She wonders why someone with that kind of money would have a budget at all. Yet we all have to learn to live within our means, I remind her. And that having that amount of money carries with it obligations to live a certain lifestyle. And possible burdens we cannot even begin to imagine. There's much to be said for keeping life simple, whether that's due to physical or financial constraints or just a feeling that life isn't exactly how you want it to be for you and your family.

Learning to be content with what is frees up your creativity to see opportunity you might otherwise miss as you stew in your perceived misery. Take on a determination to find your independence. Allow what is inside you, shut down and not free, to burst forth into a life lived at full speed ahead. Let your energy build, always striving toward that precious authentic freedom of your Higher Self and away from being imprisoned by materialism, an external search for freedom. Freedom requires self-confidence, a God-Spirit-Self-Confidence. To step out and be who you are, a precious Child of God. As Dr. Paul Masters of the International University of Metaphysics reminds us, "You are ONE with the unlimited freedom of God within you."

Freedom is such a cherished quality of life. No wonder people all over the world continue to reach out for it, protesting, often fighting wars over protecting that right, and far too many sacrificing their very lives for it. Those who wish to imprison us are fearful of what freedom will bring diversity, candidness, free will. It's far easier to govern and control a population who is appreciative of conformity. They don't want you to think for yourself, or they make life simply too tough to do so, because you're basically trying to just survive each day. Nevertheless, our reaching out for independence in both our inner world and the wider world requires our participation in each system.

I leave you now with a quote from Deepak Chopra's book, Seven Spiritual Laws of Success:

Law of Detachment: I will allow myself and others the freedom to be who they are. I will not rigidly impose my idea of how things should be. I am willing to accept uncertainty allowing spontaneous solutions to emerge out of the problem, the confusion, disorder, and chaos. Uncertainty is my path to freedom. I step into the field of all possibilities and anticipate the excitement occurring when I open to an infinity of choices.

Cheryl, from Michigan, says, "Having had Multiple Sclerosis for almost thirty years, I've learned much about adapting and squeezing joy out of life. Therefore, I am a metaphysical minister who believes God is in everything, everywhere. And, the Sweet God-Spirit surely lives in my little Maya-puppy, who kept me connected with life after my youngest son was killed in a freak automobile accident ten years ago."
