Cards & Curios
with Dan Pelletier

Jerusha and I were enjoying one of those comfortable silences that can stretch out between friends, both scrying the decanted 2005 Barolo Monprivato, while waiting for Eli.

She broke the word-fast, "Was a time when you and I could not have sat here, together; much less lift a glass together."

"I remember a lot of those times; I may have only been one when Rosa Parks wouldn't move; but I remember seeing the news on James Meredith, listening to my father swear at the television. I was nine when Martin Luther King delivered his famous 'I Have A Dream', and I've carried those words with me since - perhaps in impertinence or violent opposition to my parental units beliefs."

"The Watts riots…oh my the turbulence of 64 and 65 were amazing…the passing of the Civil Rights act - Voting Rights Act…you know that Stokely Carmichael, coined the term 'black power' in a speech right in Seattle." TAROT GARDEN

"Really, in Seattle?" I wondered aloud.

"Ya know we ain't perfect yet, but we've come a long ways in a short time the way I see it."

"My dad dang near had a coronary when he saw me hug Sylvia Gates and exchange a brief platonic kiss."

"Lawd, I'd love ta seen that. But yeah, true freedom has a cost. A high cost paid, both sides of the aisle, both sides of the colour line, all sides of the generation gap. Your daddy paid his way, my daddy paid his way. But we meet in the end."

Eli walked in and wandered over with a stack of books in his arms. "Success!" he exclaimed as he sat down, gave the decanter a harsh swirl and began to pour the glasses overly full.

"This ain't screw-top, and we're not at The Happy Time." Jerusha's eyes shot daggers at Eli's touch of gauche.

"Whatcha talkin' bout?" he looked at us from under his chaotic eyebrows.

"Freedom" came my quick reply.

"Now there's a subject. I spoze you were going on about how we emancipated ourselves from old world bureaucracy, control, and tyranny - and created our own."

"Not really" came Jerusha's reply.

"Borders. Most of the issues in the middle-east are caused because the modern borders were imposed by Europeans with total disregard to cultural, linguistic, and religious divisions…"

"Not really" I said before a sip of Barolo exploded in my mouth, sending fireworks throughout my palate.

"Ah well, freedom to dream…freedom to study…" he indicated his stack of rare metaphysical tomes he'd just purchased, "…and freedom to do business correctly - without interference from them damned multi-billion dollar corporations that folks run to, to save a buck'."

"The retail industry has been tilted towards the tilt side with the big internet sellers'. They do a disservice to publishers, distributors, and artists - all in the name of saving the customer a buck'." Jerusha continued his thought.

"I disdain anything that squashes the artist." I set the glass down, legs slowly defining its interior.

"Small press rocks. Big-Publishers dictate what they think the public wants. Publishers often rework the artists' vision to 'correct' an image so that it conforms to what the publisher thinks the public wants to see.

"So we feature a lot of self-published and small press decks, things the public wants - but publishers don't want to publish.

"Let me run down three real quick."

I took a sip of the Barolo and eye'd Eli, "There are times when I relate to plants better than people. You've seen my rose garden…"

"Indeed we have, beautiful."

"I've said that everything I've learned about numerology I learned from nature. Dana Driscoll's trees replace the humans in her visionary approach. Built on the WCS architecture, her whimsical take literally grows on you. Her changes make sense. Her approach is well thought out. And the execution is brilliant."

I raised my glass, we all toasted, "Silenus!" and drank a hearty amount.

"Silenus was Dionysus' teacher and companion. Here we have Silenus as The Fool (who was skilled at prophecy), in a humorous homage to the Greek Gods, legends, and myths. One of the great aspects is humour. Sometimes I think we need a less serious approach to Tarot. Mike Indovina has captured a certain playfulness much needed these days.

"What can I say about The Tarot of Dreams…much has already been said about this brilliant, beautiful, and inspiring work. What I like about this second edition? It's a workers deck. The perfect size for reading…and sitters love this deck. I know readers that once they experience the sitter's reaction - The Tarot of Dreams becomes their main working deck. Often - it helps give the reader freedom to escape the staid Victorian images that most think of when they think of Tarot."

"Speaking of freedom, I believe you're free to pay the bill…"
