Cards & Curios
Interlude

with Dan Pelletier

Jerusha and I were chatting over cornbread and cider. "I was talking to the girls at the coffee stand the other day about how I used to be a customer back when the owners, Shawna and Andy, used to be across the street in a roll-out cart kept in an "antique store". It was actually more of a booth and held one bit of furniture, and the roll-up espresso stand. Back then you couldn't have just an espresso stand; an espresso stand had to be part of a storefront that sold a product. So… they had one piece of furniture."

I chewed a bit and continued, "Of course now across the street is a freeway on-ramp.

"Then I told them that their boss Andy, had a college roommate Todd (whom they've met because Andy and Todd still hang together), who used to be my boss at the Big Enn. They thought that was cool, that I used to work with Todd and knew someone they knew in an obscure way. TAROT GARDEN

"What I didn't tell them was back then at the Big Enn, I wrote a bit of a lampoon I called, 'The Christmas Letter'; I dropped off a copy at the desk of a friend, who showed it to a friend, who went to the copy machine, copied and irresponsibly distributed it.

"So Todd (the old college roommate of the guy who owns and runs the coffee stand), being the boss, had to dang near fire me. He said, 'I thought it was funny as hell and really creative, but I have to write you up.' The warning was sent to HR.

"Years later I re-wrote and posted 'The Christmas Missive' in an online forum. Jade loved it.

"Which led to Jade and I corresponding, and then meeting in person, and I know a lifetime friendship was formed. If it weren't for Todd, would I have posted that?"

Jerusha looked up over her cider, "Does Jade know that? That's pretty convoluted. You'll have to let me read that 'Christmas Missive' sometime."

"Mebbe. If I can find a copy. Say, did you know The Prairie Tarot by Robin Ator is out? Even my wife said, 'This is really good….' If the American West mythos appeals (and to some of us it resonates really well) to you, it's a must have.

"Then on the complete hundred and eighty degree turn around, there's the Steampunk Tarot by Charissa Drengsen. Wow. The more I look the more I like. Yeah…It's good for shadow work. But it's also good for light work. And it's way deep.

"Anyways, gotta scoot. My bus is coming…."

We hugged.

As I left the shop, the bell at the door made its ring….
